Fortschritte beim nVidia-Blob für FreeBSD/amd64

Viele, inklusive mir, haben schon aufgegeben zu hoffen, dass es eines Tages einen nVidia-Blob für FreeBSD/amd64 geben könnte und sind auf ATI umgestiegen. Aber nun ist Licht am Ende des Tunnels zu sehen. In den letzten Monaten gab es eine Reihe Commits in FreeBSD 8-CURRENT, die neben Robert Nolands DRI-Infrastruktur auch nVidia stark unter die Arme greifen. Und tatsächlich scheint nVidia - so sagt zumindest der Chef der Unix-Treiberentwicklung - mit der Entwicklung eines Treibers für FreeBSD/amd64 begonnen zu haben. Es wird bis zum ersten Treiber noch einige Zeit dauern, aber man ist definitiv auf dem Weg. Einige Zitate, entnommen aus nVidias offiziellem Support-Forum:

Like I said earlier, I've worked with John Baldwin to test/debug preliminary snapshots of the new kernel interfaces (against an 8.0-CURRENT snapshot). The NVIDIA UNIX graphics driver stack is now mostly functional on FreeBSD/amd64 with John's changes (native 64-bit and 32-bit OpenGL applications work, for example). For those of you monitoring this thread in the hopes of receiving status updates: Alan Cox very recently committed a set of supporting changes to HEAD (see http://svn.freebsd.org/viewvc/base?v...evision=195649). John plans on updating his branch over the next few days. I'll probably have to resolve the pending driver updates against a current snapshot at that point, retest and debug any problems (as time permits). So while it will likely still be a while before there is a FreeBSD snapshot/release and BETA driver for you to test, progress is still being made.

Also, wird es was in absehbarer Zeit? Vielleicht. Ich bin auf jeden Fall gespannt. Schön ist zumindest, dass es an der Front endlich Fortschritt gibt und nVidia zugibt, dass sie am Treiber arbeiten. Und bis er sich auszahlt, tut die ATI auch ihren Dienst ausreichend gut. Alternativ gibt es da auch noch eine 250GB Platte mit Windows...

Gute Nachrichten... also kann die nVidia-Karte erstmal in der Kiste bleiben
