Radeon X300SE Softboot möglich?

    Hallo,
    ich habe aktuell ein kleines Problem: Ich habe 2 GeForce 7600GT, beide PCIe. Ich möchte unter amd64 zwei Monitore betreiben. Während die erste Karte perfekt mit "nv" läuft, funktioniert die zweite nicht. Und zwar kann der "nv" Treiber sie nicht mittels "int10" starten, sie bleibt also abgeschaltet und kann daher kein Bild ausgeben. Ich brauche also eine zweite Karte, die per int10 gestartet werden kann.

    Eine Karte mit Radeon X300SE Chipsatz würde die Voraussetzungen erfüllen. Sie hat einen Dvi-Ausgang und sie funktioniert mir dem freien "radeon" Treiber, wenn auch nur im 2D Modus.

    Mein Frage daher: Kann ich eine Radeon X300SE basierte Karte mittels "int10" oder einem anderen Mechanismus "softbooten"?

    Bzw. wofür man dies benötigt?

    Moderne Rechner starten - wenn mehrere Grafikkarten eingebaut sind - bein Start nur die erste oder die die im BIOS als "Primary" eingestellt ist. Alle anderen Grafikkarten bleiben abgeschaltet. Das Betriebssystem sieht sie zwar, weil sie sich am PCI-Bus oder anderem (AGP, PCIe) identifizieren, sie können aber nicht benutzt werden. Das macht man um Strom zu sparen.
    Will man jetzt eine sekundäre Grafikkarte nutzen, muss man sie erst einschalten oder "softbooten". Das passiert über einen üblen Hack über den Interrupt 10 (int10). Tut man das nicht, sieht X.org zwar de Grafikkarte, kann sie aber nicht nutzen. Das Ergebinis sind Fehlermeldungen wie "cannot read V_BIOS". Während der propritäre nVidia-Blob die Grafikkarten wahlweise über ein internes Interface per Kernelmodul oder Int10 starten kann, verfügt der freie "nv" über keine Option dazu. Ich kann daher meine sekundäre Kate zwar sehen, da ich aber keine Möglichkeit habe sie zu starten, kann X.org auch kein Bild auf ihr ausgeben, sondern stirbt mit Fehlermeldung.

    Da der nVidia-Blob nicht für amd64 existiert, ich diese Platform aber brauche um meinen kompletten RAM nutzen zu können, brauche ich also eine zweite Grafikkarte, die ich "softbooten" kann. Leider finden sich im Netz recht wenig Informationen darüber, mit welchen Karten und Treibern es funktioniert und mit welchen nicht. Ein andere Option wäre natürlich einen Weg zu finden die zweite Grafikkarte zu starten, was laut Google aber unmöglich sein dürfte.

    Genau 4GB, aber das Memory Hole klaut mir ganze 1,25GB. Und ich komme auch nicht auf weniger, egal wie ich an den Schaltern im BIOS drehe. PAE ist auch keine Option, weil nvidia.ko damit wieder nicht kann :(

    Ich bin grade am grübeln, wie du auf die 4GB kommst O.o Das sind doch nur 2^32 Bit = 512MiB ~512MB... d.h. du bräuchtest schon PAE um mehr als die 512MiB zu adressieren...

    Ahhh ich hab mist erzählt... das sind ja 2^32Byte... = 4GiB... Okay ich nehme alles zurück.

    Was mich noch interessieren würde, was für einen Rechner du da hast. Welches Board, welchen Prozessor? Ich bin auch am überlegen mir einen Opteron zu holen deswegen. Bzw eigentlich 2 oder mehr. XD
    Mh vllt mache ich dazu besser auch einen eigenen Thread auf...

    Man hat 2^32 Byte zur Verfügung. In den Bereich müssen aber auch die Adressen der Zusatzkarten und der Busse reingemappt werden, die dann bei 4GiB RAM den Speicher überdecken. Da sich allein PCIe ca. 1GiB zockt und noch ein bischen anderer Kram hinzukommt, sind so bei mir nur 2,75GiB RAM möglich. Bei amd64 tritt das Problem nicht auf, da man deutlich mehr Speicheradressen zur Verfügung hat und es deshlab so hinschieben kann, dass die Adressen der Zusatzkarten die Speicheradressen des RAM nicht überdecken. PAE macht im Prinzip das gleiche, nur viel unsauberer...

    Der neue, freie "nv" Treiber in Version 2 kann seit einiger Zeit auch Dualhead. Ebenso wie der nvidia.ko Blob. Zwar och kein Xinerama, aber das lässt sich verschmerzen. Problem ist also gelöst, oder besser gesagt umgangen :)
