Ursprünglich wollte ich eigentlich nur die Frequenz von meinem FSB wissen und bin durch Googeln auf dmidecode gestoßen. Interessant ist die Ausgabe für den Prozessor - Max Speed 3700 MHz und Current Speed 3200 MHz. Kann ich echt um 500 Mhz overclocken und dann auf 7400 MHz kommen?

Ja, du kannst um 500MHz auf dann 3700MHz übertakten. Ob die Hardware das mitmacht oder die CPU sich in Rauch auflöst, ist eine andere Frage... Der Wert kommt so zustande: Der Basistakt sind 200 MHz und die meisten (alle) Sockel 940 CPUs hatten einen maximalen Multiplikator von 18 oder 18,5. Also 200 * 18,5 = 3700MHz theoretischer Maximaltakt.

Nun legen CPU-Hersteller den maximalen Multiplikator aber deutlich höher, als für das höchste Serienmodell benötigt wird. Man kann nicht in die Zukunft schauen und vielleicht erreicht die Plattform Leistungsstufen, die man nicht vorhergesehen hat. Und die Übertakungskinder haben als netten Nebeneffekt etwas zu spielen. Dein 6400+ mit 3200MHz war das Topmodell der Serie, so wirklich taktfreudig war die ganze K8-Architektur nicht (musste sie auch nicht sein) und die ersten 90nm Dualcores schon gar nicht. Du könntest vielleicht 3300MHz oder gerade noch 3350MHz erreichen, zum Risiko die Hardware zu grillen und zum Preis einer deutlich höheren Leistungsaufnahme und Abwärme.

Im Ernst, selbst wenn es finanziell echt mies aussieht, versuche mal eine gebrauchte Box aus der Core2-Generation oder noch besser der ersten Core i7 Generation zu bekommen. Die kosten nicht mehr die Welt, bei einem Quadcore ist man schon für ~50€ dabei. Und die sind wesentlich schneller als dein Athlon X2. Weitaus mehr, als du mit jeder Übertaktung und Optimierung auch nur im Ansatz erreichen kannst. Bei neuen Maschinen reicht selbst der billigste Celeron, um die mindestens zu versechsfachen. Eher noch mehr.
 
Vielen Dank für die ausführliche Auskunft! Doch in Bezug auf den Vorschlag mit dem Intel-Prozessor bräuchte ich natürlich auch ein anderes Mainboard, da der Intel nicht auf einen AM2-Sockel passt. Aber vielleicht für die Zukunft trotzdem ein guter Tipp!
