Freezes bei OpenBSD 7.8

Nach dem Upgrade auf Version 7.8 hatte ich jetzt mehrfach hintereinander den Laptop (thinkpad t420) komplett eingefroren und konnte nur noch ihn kaltstarten. Dies passierte mir v.a. bei Nutzung von Firefox und Tor-Browser. Bei einem Freeze gab die tty noch folgendes aus (siehe Foto):

Wieviel RAM hat denn dein Notebook? Wie sieht denn deine login.conf und deine sysctl.conf aus? Alles noch default oder hast du in dort Einstellungen veraendert? Ist dein User in der login class staff und wenn ja, wie sehen die Einstellungen dazu in der login.conf aus?

wo finde ich noch mal sysctl.conf? Unter /etc ist sie nicht.

Dann fuege deinen User dieser neuen desktop class hinzu: $ doas usermod -L desktop tatzahn - vorausgesetzt, dass dein User auch tatzahn heisst.

Es kann sein, dass deine Einstellungen in der login.conf durch das Update ueberschrieben worden sind. Hast Du nach dem Upgrade von 7.7 auf 7.8 auch ein sysmerge durchgefuehrt? Wenn man nicht aufpasst und alles ungeprueft installiert, dann werden die configs ueberschrieben. Daher ist es besser, anstelle direkt in der login.conf die Aenderungen unter /etc/login.conf.d/ zu speichern, da updates hier nichts veraendern.

Es kann sein, dass deine Einstellungen in der login.conf durch das Update ueberschrieben worden sind. Hast Du nach dem Upgrade von 7.7 auf 7.8 auch ein sysmerge durchgefuehrt? Wenn man nicht aufpasst und alles ungeprueft installiert, dann werden die configs ueberschrieben. Daher ist es besser, anstelle direkt in der login.conf die Aenderungen unter /etc/login.conf.d/ zu speichern, da updates hier nichts veraendern.
sysmerge habe ich durchgeführt. Da wurden keine weiteren Angaben verlangt. Freezes hatte ich vorher schon ab und an mal. Jetzt war es aber fünfmal hintereinander.

Hast Du auch ein pkg_add -u durchgefuehrt? sysmerge aktualisiert nun das Basissystem. und nicht die Packages. Welche Version hat denn dein Firefox?
 
wo finde ich noch mal sysctl.conf? Unter /etc ist sie nicht.
Wenn du die nicht unter /etc/sysctl.conf findest, dann existiert sie auch nicht und es wurden keine Aenderungen an den Defaults durchgefuehrt. Das ist dann auch gut so. :-)

1,5GB ist fuer den Firefox schon recht knapp. Von daher wuerde ich es mal versuchen wie weiter oben beschrieben. Die Datei desktop anlegen und deinen User anstelle in der login class staff in die class desktop setzen. Evtl. hilft das schon.

Auf dem Desktop schadet es auch nicht, smt zu aktivieren, damit deine CPU auch alle Threads nutzt. Das machst Du im Terminal so:

# sysctl hw.smt=1

Dann kannst Du testen ob es etwas an der Performance und Stabilitaet aendert und wenn Du das permanent aktivieren willst, dann kannst Du das wie folgt in in die sysctl.conf eintragen:

# echo "hw.smt=1" >> /etc/sysctl.conf
 
Folgendes hab ich beim Aktualisieren auf OpenBSD 7.8 gemacht:

  • Daten gesichert
  • sysupgrade
  • sysmerge
  • pkg_add -u
fw_update wurde zusammen mit sysupgrade ausgeführt. Das lief alles problemlos durch. login.conf wurde HEUTE geändert.

Hast Du nach dem einfrieren und vor dem Kaltstart, noch einen Ping oder arping zu deinem Laptop machen können?
Nein. Geht das, ohne dass die Kisten hier aktiv miteinander im Netzwerk verbunden sind?

Das Einfrieren war bei mir sofort vorbei, als ich in den Settings nach "Performance" gesucht habe, und dort die HW-Unterstuetzung deaktiviert habe.
 
Ich hatte mal irgendwo gelesen, dass man im BIOS das Teilen des Speichers zwischen Grafikkarte und RAM deaktivieren soll. Ich weiss allerdings nicht mehr, obs bei Radeon oder Intel GPUs war. Waere evtl. auch noch einen Versuch wert.

Da gibt es im BIOS des t420 keine Einstellungsmöglichkeiten.
 
Also die Freezes gehen fröhlich weiter. Ich habe jetzt bei Firefox und Tor-Browser unter Setting nach Performance geschaut. Die HW-Unterstützung war nur bei Firefox eingeschaltet, beim Tor-Browser nicht. Als nächstes kam ein Freeze mit Tor-Browser. Ich habe dann versucht den t420 mit ping anzusprechen. Das Ergebnis sah folgendermaßen aus:

Also komplett festgefahren.
 
Nur um auszuschließen, daß es kein HW Fehler ist. Kannst du mal eine live distro ggf auch Linux booten? Bei meinem t570 war z.B die interne Stromversorgung defekt.
 
Kannst Du mal den output von $ ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log und den output von $ xrandr posten?

Dann system neu starten und schauen, ob die Freezes dann weg sind und dann nochmal in die $ ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log schauen, ob die Fehlermeldung dort auch weg ist.
