KDE, Gnome und XfcE frieren ein

Nachdem ich eine neue Nvidia GK habe , eine Zotac Nvidia Gforce GTX 1660,frieren die Desktops KDE, Gnome und XfCE ein. Nur noch Hardreset möglich.

ABER !! Der MATE-Desktop läuft ohne Probleme und stabil !

Auf den ersten Blick klingt sowas nach Hitzeproblem.
Welche Graka war vorher drin? Hast du frisch installiert?

Die sollte mit 600MB/s angesprochen werden, nicht mit 150. Entweder ist da was im BIOS verdreht oder die Platte hat einen Jumper, der auf 150 festgesetzt ist. Guck auch im BIOS, ob das was zu SATA powermanagement umzustellen ist.
Prüf das Kabel auch mal, wenn da was auf Halbmast steckt, kann das schon die Lösung sein und muss nicht an der gpu liegen. ;)

Habe jetzt Nvidia 430.50 per pkg iinstalliert. Ausserdem war ZFS bei fast 90%. Habe erstmal ein paar Dateien gelöscht. Jetzt bei 65%. Geht wieder ab wie eine Rakete unter Mate. Denn auch Mate hatte schon gezickt . :) Ok, eine 300 GB Festplatte ist schnell voll und vielleicht hat die schon eine kleine Macke. Hat schon ein paar Jahre auf dem Buckel. Werde mir demnächst 2 TB blue von Western digital zulegen . Was zum Basteln über Weihnachten , denn mein Urlaub neigt sich jetzt langsam dem Ende entgegen .:zitter:
 
Hallo pit , ich habe vor ein paar Wochen nvidia kompilert, da es noch kein pkg für eine GTX 1660 gab. Habe dafür vorher die Kernel src heruntergeladen. Von Nvidia die entsprechenden Datei ebenfalls . Dann make und make install. Das funktioniert auch ohne Probleme. Bei mir lag das Problem wohl das ZFS bei über 90% war. Oder evtl die Festplatte nicht mehr 100%ig ok ist.

ZFS findet es auf mechanischen Platten nicht besonders lustig, wenn es über irgendwo zwischen 80 bis 85 Prozent gefüllt ist. Das liegt einfach daran, dass es als Copy on Write Dateisystem für jede Operation einen leeren Block finden und den Schreibkopf dahin fahren muss. Je höher der Füllstand ist, umso unwahrscheinlicher wird es einen Block in der Nähe zu finden und damit steigen die durchschnittlichen Zugriffszeiten drastisch an.
 
KDE läuft jetzt auch wieder stabil. Ganz genau weiss ich nicht wo der Fehler lag. Habe festgestellt, hatte in der rc.conf zweimal zfs_enable="YES" :huth: Habe noch enable linux64_enable="YES" hinzugefügt und Autodump auf "NO"

Hab herausgefunden wie jetzt KDE richtig pflutscht unter 4k. Wichtig ist die Bildschrimfrequenz
auf 50Hz einzustellen. Sonst artet KDE mit der Standardfrequenz von 60Hz. zu einer Ruckelorgie aus. :o

Die ganzen Probleme liegen also bei der Grafikkarte. FreeBSD und die meisten Desktops kommen anscheinend bei 4k Auflösung nicht mit 60Hz Bildschirmfrequnz klar. Das lag also nicht an ZFS. Vielleicht nur teilweise. Youtube 4kp60 Videos werden ja auch nicht abgespielt.
 
ZFS findet es auf mechanischen Platten nicht besonders lustig, wenn es über irgendwo zwischen 80 bis 85 Prozent gefüllt ist.

Interessante Information. Tut mir leid, dass ich jetzt zu dem Problem des Threadstellers nichts beitragen kann, aber zu diesem Statement würde ich gerne mal fragen: M.E. werden bei UFS direkt mal 15% der Festplattenkapazität reserviert/gesperrt, um eine gute Performance zu gewährleisten, richtig? Ist dann dieses Verhalten von ZFS verwunderlich? Und wenn von mechanischen Platten die Rede ist, heißt das, dass ZFS auf SSD's dieses Verhalten nicht zeigt und dann bis 100 % die volle Performance erbracht wird?

Nein.
Bei mechanischen Platten muss der Arm erst hinfahren, was eh schon Zeit kostet und dann kostet es noch mehr Zeit, weil ZFS mehr damit beschäftigt ist, freien Platz zu 'finden'.
Eine Festplatte ist im Zugriff außen schneller auf der Scheibe.
 
@mr44er sagt es. Also, vereinfacht: Klassische Dateisysteme wie UFS überschreiben Daten. Wenn eine Datei aus den Blöcken ABC besteht und B wird geändert, überschreibt das Dateisystem B. Die Datei besteht also nach der Änderung immer noch aus ABC. Copy on Write Dateisysteme wie ZFS überschreiben keine Daten. Wird Block B geändert, schreibt das Dateisystem den Block mit den veränderten Daten an eine andere Stelle. Sagen wir mal E. Die Datei ist nach der Änderung also AEC. Das hat den großen Vorteil, dass es einfacher ist zu garantieren, dass das Dateisystem einen Crash überlebt. Wenn im UFS-Fall das System abschmiert, während B geschrieben wird, ist die Datei kaputt. Bei ZFS ist nur Block E kaputt, aber B noch heil. Man verliert zwar die gerade geschriebene Änderung, aber die Datei als ganzes ist noch intakt.

Der Nachteil dabei ist die Fragmentierung. Bei mechanischen Platten hängt die Lesegeschwindigkeit von Daten davon ab, wie weit außerhalb sie liegen. Das ist ganz logisch: Die Drehzahl der Platte ist konstant, also ist die pro Umdrehung vom Schreibkopf überfahrene Fläche außen größer als innen. Ergo können außen mehr Daten pro Umdrehung gelesen und geschrieben werden. Außerdem steigt die Zugriffszeit an, je größer die Strecke ist, die der Schreibkopf von einer Position zur anderen zurücklegen muss zurücklegen muss.

Das ist letztendlich ein Optimierungsproblem und über 40 Jahre Festplatten ist da viel Hirnschmalz reingeflossen. Die meisten modernen Dateisysteme gehen dabei grob so vor, dass sie außen an der Platte zu schreiben beginnen. Dem liegt die Annahme, dass das Betriebssystem und die Programme zuerst installiert und erst später Daten raufkopiert werden, zugrunde. Mit der großen Ausnahme von NTFS lassen sie dabei Platz zwischen den Dateien. Wächst später eine Datei, werden die zusätzlichen Daten möglichst in freie Blöcke, die direkt an die Datei angrenzen, geschrieben. Geht das nicht, wählt man möglichst nahe gelegene Blöcke. Man versucht also einzelne Dateien am Stück zu halten (und die Dateifragmentierung damit gering), nimmt aber weites Auseinanderliegen unterschiedlicher Dateien in Kauf (das treibt die Festplattenplattenfragmentierung hoch).

Für klassische Dateisysteme ist das natürlich einfacher, als für Copy on Write Dateisysteme. Die Grenze von ich meine im Moment 7% bei UFS entscheidet nur, wie viel Arbeit das System in die Platzierung von Dateien steckt. Bis 93% Füllstand nimmt es einen einfachen Algorithmus, darüber einen aufwändigeren Algorithmus. Das ist vor allem ein historisches Relikt und dem geschuldet, dass es UFS in verschiedenen Varianten seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre gibt. Andere klassische Dateisysteme wie XFS sparen sich das, haben damit aber das Problem, dass jeder Nutzer das Dateisystem bis zu 100% Füllstand beschreiben kann. Und je näher es an die 100% geht, umso größer wird die Fragmentierung und umso mehr muss der Schreibkopf springen. Was auf die Performance schlägt.

Bei Copy on Write Dateisystemen wird das Problem früher, bei ZFS wie gesagt so Pi mal Daumen ab 80 bis 85%, relevant. Einfach weil jede Operation die Fragmentierung steigert. Das ist kein Problem, solange sich nahe beieinanderliegende Blöcke finden lassen (und daher ist die meist gigantisch hohe Fragmentierungsangabe von ZFS auch kein Grund für Panik), wird aber sehr schnell eklig, wenn das nicht mehr geht. ZFS reserviert aus dem und einigen anderen Gründen daher auch 3%. Aber anders als UFS spricht es nicht darüber, es zeigt die letzten 3% Speicherplatz einfach nicht an.

Dann muss ich wohl noch was zu NTFS sagen: Windows sollte und soll auch auf wirklich übler Hardware laufen. Um auf aus sehr langsamen Festplatten noch Leistung rauszuquetschen, legt NTFS alle Dateien extrem nah beineinander. Es hält also die Festplattenfragmentierung niedrig. Das kommt aber zu dem Preis, dass einzelne Dateien schnell fragmentieren. Das berüchtigte Defragmentierungstools kopiert die Daten so um, dass die Dateifragmentierung sinkt, die Festplattenfragmentierung aber niedrig bleibt.

SSDs haben eine lineare Zugriffszeit und es gibt kein Innen und Außen. Jede Speicherzelle kann gleichschnell erreicht und gelesen werden. Damit stellt sich die ganze Überlegung nicht. Danke für diese ausführliche Schilderung! Noch eine andere Frage in diesem Zusammenhang: Ich hatte irgendwo gelesen, dass Swapping mit ZFS problematisch ist, bzw. nicht richtig funktionieren und das System zum Absturz bringen soll?
 
Man sollte keine Swap auf ZFS (also in ein zvol) legen. Denn ZFS braucht für jede Operation RAM. Wenn du aber kein RAM mehr frei ist und das System daher swappen will, kann es das nicht. Eben weil es keinen freien RAM für ZFS gibt. Und damit stürzt es ab.

SWAP ist doch dann gar nicht an Dateisysteme gebunden, wenn man keine SWAP-Datei nutzt.
Ansonsten hat doch SWAP gar kein Dateisystem, bzw, sein System-spezifisches und ureigenes Format.? Ich weiß gerade nicht, ob FreeBSD SWAP zB von Linux genutzt werden kann und als solcher erkannt wird.
Aber innerhalb FreeBSD: was hat denn da SWAP mit ZFS zu tun?

Es geht @cabriofahrer wahrscheinlich um einen Denkfehler. SWAP-Datei vs. SWAP-Partition.

Punkt 1: SWAP sollte nicht auf ein ZFS gelegt werden, weder als zvol noch als Datei.
Punkt 2: Eine SWAP-Partition kann problemlos neben einem ZFS als Ergänzung betrieben werden. Ist auch standard-Einrichtung von FreeBSD:

Bei heutigen RAM Größen in den aktuellen Maschinen gelten die früheren Faustregeln zur Größe der/des Swappartition/-files eh nicht mehr.
Es war einmal, dass man als SWAP am Besten entweder die "Größe des RAM" oder die "Größe des RAM * 2" konfigurierte.
Bei heutigen Maschinen mit 16, 32, 64 oder sogar 96 GB und mehr RAM macht das keinen Sinn - wer mal ner Maschine zuschauen konnte, wie die z.B. knapp 16G mittendrin auf Disk schreiben musste (und wie lange das auch mit ner SSD dauerte und die Maschine dabei quasi "hing") weiß, was ich meine.
Is natürlich von der Hardware (es gibt Server, welche performant I/O können) und vom Zweck der Maschine abhängig, aber ich z.B. konfiguriere seit Jahren gar kein Swap mehr auf Maschinen mit 16G oder mehr - hatte selten Probleme deswegen; sogar mein Laptop mit nur 4GB kommt ohne aus.
Wie gesagt, das mag hoch abhängig vom Zweck der Maschine sein, eine Developer-Workstation is da anders zu bewerten als ein Server für 100+ Clients gleichzeitig, aber der Daten-I/O von GBytes im RAM nach Platte oder zurück is halt "teuer" (zeitlicher Bezug).
RAM is im Fall der Fälle immer noch nur durch eins richtig zu ersetzen - noch mehr RAM.
 
Willst du ein Notebook in hibernation versetzen kommst du um den Swap nicht rum... Und der sollte dann mindestens RAM-größe haben, sonst klappt das nicht.
