So last week I asked for donations for the hackathon, to make sure
that we can hold it. We have just enough money to cover it, but it
will be tight, and then we will have operational difficulties right
afterwards (ie. all the other things that it costs to run OpenBSD --
we will not be able to pay for them). So that is why I asked last
week, before the hackathon happened. It is better to ask before, than
ask afterwards when we are plunged into a real financial crisis.
We've had a few people step up to help. For a total of about $1200
USD. Out of a bill of $20,000 USD or something like that. And I
think all of them were individuals. Not companies, not organizations.
So I am rather dissapointed that people do not find enough value in
OpenBSD to assist us in making it better.
A couple of people mailed me asking what the hackathon cost was going
to be, but thus far nothing has come of that, after I gave them the
figure.
What did people think we were talking about? It's looking like it
might be 60 developers, put up in a hotel for 7 nights. Most are
flying themselves in, and a few are able to pay for their now rooms.
No, it is not cheap, but I have managed to get the cost way under what
it normally would be. $20,000 is about 1/4th of what the total
expenditure will be, most of it out of developer pockets.
I certainly hope some people step up. There are some *gigantic*
companies running and depending on OpenBSD and OpenSSH, and I am
astounded that they never really give back.
Magic happens when the developers get together in person; if you
expect magic to keep on happening, we need your help.
