Gibt es Neues zur schlechten 3D-Performance von Xorg 7.4?

Als Xorg 7.4 (schon mit FreeBSD 7.1) herauskam, wurde in einigen Threads hier schnell die sehr schlechte Performance mit den freien Treibern gegenüber zu den früheren Versionen von Xorg bemängelt.
Ich habe jetzt mal eine Frischinstallation von FreeBSD 7.2 mit dem Xorg von der DVD auf einem PC mit einer ATI Radeon HD 4850 ausprobiert und war zunächst positiv überrascht, daß es mit dieser Karte überhaupt 3D-Beschleunigung gab. Allerdings sehr schwach, wie man es von Xorg 7.4 gewohnt ist. Ca. 200 fps in glxgears. Quake II unter Wine nicht spielbar, was auf einem älteren FreeBSD mit Xorg 7.3 nicht der Fall war (dort absolut schnell und flüssig).

Frage: Gibt es jetzt mittlerweile die Möglichkeit, durch ein Portupgrade einzelne Module (z.B. xorg-server) auf den neuesten Stand zu bringen und dadurch wieder eine Performance wie früher zu erzielen, oder muß man auf Xorg 7.5 warten?
Was genau ist eigentlich schuld an dieser miesen 3D-Performance von Xorg 7.4?
 
Was du da siehst ist Software-Beschleunigung. Deine Karte kann erst mit dem aktuellen Treiber aus -current überhaupt 3D-Beschleunigung und das ist noch nicht in FreeBSD8 oder FreeBSD 7 gemerged. Bleibt außerdem die Frage ob das dann überhaupt stabil sein wird. Vielleicht kann Yamagi dazu ein zwei Sätze schreiben. Er hat es ja mal getestet.
 
Für eine ATI Karte, wenn sie überhaupt unterstüzt wird, musst du sowieso DRM/DRI installiert. DRM ist für die Hardwarebeschleunigung zuständig.
 
Die HD4850 ist eine Karte auf Basis des R700 Chipsatzes. Dieser wird zur Zeit nicht mit 3D-Beschleunigung unterstützt. Aber wir sind nah dran, wer frickeln möchte, kann es schon heute haben, aber ich würde warten. Du brauchst ein aktuelles DRM, welches in 8.0 enthalten sein wird. Außerdem benötigst du Mesa3D in der kommenden Version 7.6. Diese ist vor einigen Tagen von Hauptzweig abgetrennt worden, wird nun ausführlich getestet und einer langen Reihe Bugfixes unterzogen werden. Wenn sie später im Herbst veröffentlicht wird und in den Ports aufschlägt, wird die Karte 3D-Beschleunigung haben. Der Erfahrung nach kannst du davon ausgehen, dass durch die gute Arbeit von Robert Noland FreeBSD das 3D Tage bis Wochen vor den meisten Linuxen haben wird. Ein konkretes Datum für Mesa3D 7.6 gibt es nicht, aber ich denke, dass "vor Weihnachten" eine recht sichere Aussage ist.

Der hängt sich echt rein und kümmert sich wirklich super um die Intel und AMD Grafikkarten. :)

Wenn man eine Standardinstallation mit sysinstall mit Xorg macht, hat man von Anfang an alles dabei, was man für 3D braucht. Das war immer so.

So wie ich das sehe, habe ich wohl Hardware-3D-Beschleunigung. Und das gleiche Ergebnis erzielte ich mit einer Mobile Radeon X700 auf meinem Notebook. Mit Xorg 7.3 super Performance (sogar UT2004 war spielbar) mit 7.4 völlig unbrauchbar.
Also nochmal: Woran liegt das genau?
 
Nein, nein. Du hast eine teilweise Hardwarebeschleunigung. Die R600 und R700 nutzen die 3D-Beschleunigung schon für den 2D-Desktop (das nennt sich "EXA") und für Videos per XVideo. Das war es. "Echtes" 3D im klassischen Sinne gibt es halt noch nicht, dennoch zeigt er bereits "Direct Rendering" an, da es teilweise genutzt wird.

Deine X700 war ein R300 oder R400 Chip, weiß ich nicht genau. Beide sind schon länger voll unterstützt und wird auch 3D liefern können. Kannst du mal die xorg.conf für das Ding posten?

Durch die diversen Options erreiche ich damit mit glxgears ca. 2400 fps, ohne diese ca. nur 1800.

Mal n' Zwischenfrage : Wieso läuft deine Graka mit dem "radeon"-Treiber !
Bei meiner 4850er funktionierts nur mit dem "radeonhd-devel " ??

Das ist die xorg.conf für die Radeon M X700. Doch auch bei der HD 4850 habe ich den Eintrag "radeon" gefunden. Warum das so ist, weiß ich nicht. Werwende wie gesagt die Xorg 7.4 Versiom von der 7.2-release-DVD. Und wurde mit Xorg -configure erstellt.

Die automatische Grafikkartenerkennung verweist wohl immer auf radeon/ati, nie auf radeonhd, was wohl auf Machtzankerei und Muskelspiele im Xorg-Projekt zurückzuführen ist.
