Am 16. Juni 2020 hat das FreeBSD Release Engineering Team FreeBSD 11.4 freigegeben. FreeBSD 11.4 ist das fünfte und geplant letzte Subrelease des FreeBSD 11 Zweigs. FreeBSD 11.4 wird bis zum 30.09.2021 unterstützt werden.

    • Das netatalk Protokoll wurde von services(5) entfernt.
  • Storage:
    • ZFS Bookmarks können nun umbenannt werden.

    • Die Unterstützung für JMicron® JMB582 und JMB585 AHCI Controller wurde hinzugefügt.

    • Die Unterstützung für Intel® Cannon Lake PCH wurde zu snd_hda(4) hinzugefügt
  • Netzwerk:
    • libalias(3) und ipfw(4) wurden aktualisiert und unterstützen nun RFC 8598/Carrier-grade NAT (CGN). CGN wurde als eine Übergangslösung entwickelt um einen Pool von wenigen IPv4-Adressen für viele Endbenutzer nutzbar zu machen.

   The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the
   availability of FreeBSD 11.4-RELEASE. This is the fifth and final release
   of the stable/11 branch.

   Some of the highlights:

     * The clang, llvm, lld, lldb, and compiler-rt utilities as well as
       libc++ have been updated to upstream version 10.0.0.

     * OpenSSL has been updated to version 1.0.2u.

     * Unbound has been updated to version 1.9.6.

     * The pkg(8) utility has been updated to version 1.13.2.

     * The KDE desktop environment has been updated to version
       5.18.4.1.19.12.3.

     * The GNOME desktop environment has been updated to version 3.28.

     * Support for renaming ZFS bookmarks has been added.

     * The certctl(8) utility has been added.

     * Several feature additions and updates to userland applications.

     * Warnings for features deprecated in future releases will now be
       printed on all FreeBSD versions.

     * Warnings have been added for Kerberos GSS API algorithms deprecated
       in RFCs 6649 and 8429.

Availability

   FreeBSD 11.4-RELEASE is now available for the amd64, i386, powerpc,
   powerpc64, sparc64, armv6, and aarch64 architectures.

   FreeBSD 11.4-RELEASE can be installed from bootable ISO images or over
   the network. Some architectures also support installing from a USB memory
   stick. The required files can be downloaded as described in the section
   below.

   SHA512 and SHA256 hashes for the release ISO, memory stick, and SD card
   images are included at the bottom of this message.

   PGP-signed checksums for the release images are also available at:

   The purpose of the images provided as part of the release are as follows:

   dvd1

           This contains everything necessary to install the base FreeBSD
           operating system, the documentation, debugging distribution sets,
           and a small set of pre-built packages aimed at getting a
           graphical workstation up and running. It also supports booting
           into a "livefs" based rescue mode. This should be all you need if
           you can burn and use DVD-sized media.

   disc1

           This contains the base FreeBSD operating system. It also supports
           booting into a "livefs" based rescue mode. There are no pre-built
           packages.

   bootonly

           This supports booting a machine using the CDROM drive but does
           not contain the installation distribution sets for installing
           FreeBSD from the CD itself. You would need to perform a network
           based install (e.g., from an HTTP or FTP server) after booting
           from the CD.

   memstick

           This can be written to a USB memory stick (flash drive) and used
           to do an install on machines capable of booting off USB drives.
           It also supports booting into a "livefs" based rescue mode. There
           are no pre-built packages.

           As one example of how to use the memstick image, assuming the USB
           drive appears as /dev/da0 on your machine something like this
           should work:

           # dd if=FreeBSD-11.4-RELEASE-amd64-memstick.img \
             of=/dev/da0 bs=1m conv=sync

           Be careful to make sure you get the target (of=) correct.

   mini-memstick

           This can be written to a USB memory stick (flash drive) and used
           to boot a machine, but does not contain the installation
           distribution sets on the medium itself, similar to the bootonly
           image. It also supports booting into a "livefs" based rescue
           mode. There are no pre-built packages.

           As one example of how to use the mini-memstick image, assuming
           the USB drive appears as /dev/da0 on your machine something like
           this should work:

           # dd if=FreeBSD-11.4-RELEASE-amd64-mini-memstick.img \
             of=/dev/da0 bs=1m conv=sync

           Be careful to make sure you get the target (of=) correct.

   FreeBSD/arm SD card images

           These can be written to an SD card and used to boot the supported
           arm system. The SD card image contains the full FreeBSD
           installation, and can be installed onto SD cards as small as
           512Mb.

           For convenience for those without console access to the system, a
           freebsd user with a password of freebsd is available by default
           for ssh(1) access. Additionally, the root user password is set to
           root, which it is strongly recommended to change the password for
           both users after gaining access to the system.

           To write the FreeBSD/arm image to an SD card, use the dd(1)
           utility, replacing KERNEL with the appropriate kernel
           configuration name for the system.

           # dd if=FreeBSD-11.4-RELEASE-arm-armv6-KERNEL.img \
             of=/dev/da0 bs=1m conv=sync

           Be careful to make sure you get the target (of=) correct.

   FreeBSD 11.4-RELEASE can also be purchased on CD-ROM or DVD from several
   vendors. One of the vendors that will be offering FreeBSD 11.4-based
   products is:

   Pre-installed virtual machine images are also available for the amd64
   (x86_64), i386 (x86_32), and AArch64 (arm64) architectures in QCOW2, VHD,

FreeBSD 11.4 ist das fünfte von sechs geplanten Subreleases des FreeBSD 11 Zweigs, welche über fünf Jahre hinweg erscheinen werden. FreeBSD 11.4 wird bis drei Monate nach dem Erscheinen von FreeBSD 11.5 unterstützt werden, insgesamt wird der FreeBSD 11 Zweig bis etwa Mitte 2022 Unterstützung erhalten.

In den Release-Notes steht "...FreeBSD 11.4-RELEASE. This is the fifth and final release of the stable/11 branch.". Und unten in den FreeBSD Security Information wird als "Expected EoL" der "September 30, 2021" angegeben. Wird es tatsächlich ein FreeBSD 11.5 geben? Das würde sich deutlich mit FreeBSD 13 überschneiden...

Weil im Sprung von 11 auf 12 einige größere Sachen in den Interna geändert wurden und auch Funktionalität entfernt wurde. Und es gibt Leute, die "mission critical" Systeme fahren, wo ein Ausfall oder Fehler richtig viel Geld kosten können. Die sagen dann "Funktioniert es - lass es wie es ist.". Sowas testet man auch nicht mal so eben auf die Schnelle auf einem neuen System. Ein Major release upgrade stellt immer auch ein Risko dar, daß danach nichts mehr geht und keiner weiß warum.

Und unten in den FreeBSD Security Information wird als "Expected EoL" der "September 30, 2021" angegeben. Wird es tatsächlich ein FreeBSD 11.5 geben? Das würde sich deutlich mit FreeBSD 13 überschneiden...

Warum sollte man auf 11.4 upgraden und nicht auf 12.1? Ehrlich gesagt habe ich diese Doppelschiene bei FreeBSD nie richtig verstanden. Wenn man mich da bitte ein bißchen aufklären könnte?

Durch Infrastructure as a Service hat es sich ein vielen Bereichen geändert, aber bei komplexen Setups, vornehmlich Baremetal, wird sogut wie nie ein OS Upgrade durchgeführt. Auch RHEL betreut ja 6.X, 7.X und 8.X gleichzeitig. Irgendwann gibts ohnehin neue Anforderungen, meist wird auch gleich die HW ausgetauscht nach 5+ Jahren, da macht man alles neu. Bis dahin nur Updates die unbedingt sein müssen.

Was ich aber tatsächlich nicht verstehe, wieso sie nach 12.0 noch so viele .releases für 11 machen. Hätte genügt 11.2 mit Bugfixes und Securityupdates zu versorgen bis EOL.
 
Ich ging auch davon aus, dass wir ein 11.5 sehen werden. Daher konnte es mir beim Korrekturlesen nicht auffallen. Bei näherem Nachdenken ist ein 11.5 allerdings nicht sinnvoll: Eben weil es sich doch deutlich mit 13.0 überschneiden würde und man dann drei Zweige hätte, die betreut werden müssen. Außerdem ist das Versprechen, den Zweig 5 Jahre lang zu unterstützen, mit 11.4 erfüllt. Und zu guter Letzt waren 10.0 -> 11.0 -> 12.0 weitgehend evolutionäre Entwicklung, in der es neue Hauptreleases vor allem aufgrund kleinerer, unvermeidbarer ABI-Brüche gab. Die Upgrades dazwischen waren weitgehend harmlos.

Anders wir des wahrscheinlich mit 12.x auf 13.x aussehen. Durch die recht umfassenden Änderungen am Unterbau wird das ein größerer Sprung werden und wahrscheinlich trotz POLA zumindest für einige Nutzergruppen bedeutende Risiken und Arbeitsaufwand darstellen. Weshalb eine längere Überschneidung zwischen 12.x und 13.x sinnvoll sein könnte. Aber das muss man mal sehen, wenn es so weit ist.

z.B. Faulheit. Wenn man die neuen Features nicht braucht, dann kann man sich diverse Upgrades sparen, weil die älteren Versionen seltener Upgrades kriegen, aber trotzdem noch in Sachen Security Updates bedient werden.
 
Kleiner Hinweis:
Das aus 12.1 bekannte Grafikkartentreiber Problem schient's auch hier zu geben. Bei mir ist es nach dem reboot im multiuser Modus beim Umschalten der Auflösung abgeschmiert -> Single User Mode; mount -u -o rw /; kld_list in rc.conf auskommentieren; 2. Phase freebsd-update install; reboot; portsnap fetch update; make drm-fbsd11.2-kmod; make deinstall; make reinstall; reboot

Könnte man bei FreeBSD den Vorschlag / PR / CR machen an das 'freebsd-update install' eine Meldung anzuhängen wie "Please consider rebuildung drm-kmod in the ports before rebooting..."
