I had the same problem before and it turned out that one of my ram stick was bad. Maybe, you should check your ram too.

The 5.x install CDs require that you're machine have non-emulation
boot support for CDs. All machines with "designed for NT 4" or higher
Microsoft certifications should work (the NT4 CDs won't boot otherwise),
but this one might just be older then that. If it is, you may be able
to get things to work by using the boot floppies.
