Am 9. Juli 2019 hat das FreeBSD Release Engineering Team nach einem kurzen und unproblematischem Release-Zyklus FreeBSD 11.3 freigegeben. FreeBSD 11.3 ist das vierte von sechs geplanten Subreleases des FreeBSD 11 Zweigs, welche über fünf Jahre hinweg erscheinen werden. FreeBSD 11.3 wird bis drei Monate nach dem Erscheinen von FreeBSD 11.4 unterstützt werden, insgesamt wird der FreeBSD 11 Zweig bis etwa Mitte 2022 Unterstützung erhalten.

Die wichtigsten Neuerungen sind:
  • Allgemeines:
    • Diverse Tools akzeptieren nun zusätzlich zu Jail-IDs auch Jail-Namen um ein Jail zu spezifizieren.
    • Durch die Boot-Option init_exec kann statt init(8) ein andere Binary als PID 1 gestartet werden.
    • Der LLVM-Stack wurde auf die Version 8.0.0 aktualisiert.
    • Der in FreeBSD 12.0 standardmäßig aktive Lua-Bootloader ist jetzt optional auch in FreeBSD 11 verfügbar.
    • Alle Bootloader können nun von geli(8)-verschlüsselten Partitionen booten.
  • Storage:
    • Das Tool trim(8) zum vollständigen TRIMen von Block-Devices wurde hinzugefügt.
    • UFS-Labels dürfen jetzt Unterstriche enthalten.
    • ZFS mountet seine Datasets nun parallel.
  • Hardware:
    • Per spi(8) kann nun aus dem Userland mit Geräten am SPI-Bus kommuniziert werden.
    • Diverse Treiber für ältere Ethernet- und FastEthernet-Karten sind als deprecated markiert worden. Sie werden in FreeBSD 11.x und 12.x weiterhin funktionieren, in FreeBSD 13.0 allerdings entfernt sein. Dies betrifft: ae(4), bm(4), cs(4), de(4), dme(4), ed(4), ep(4), ex(4), fe(4), pcn(4), sf(4), sn(4), tl(4), tx(4), txp(4), vx(4), wb(4) und xe(4).
    • Die vt(4) Konsole unterstützt nun die Tastatur neuerer Apple Macbook Pro.
  • Netzwerk:
    • Unterstützung für NAT64 CLAT nach RFC 6877 wurde implementiert.
    • In RFC 8221 als deprecated markierte IPSec Algorithmen sind nun auch in FreeBSD deprecated und werden voraussichtlich ab FreeBSD 13.0 nicht mehr unterstützt werden.

   The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the
   availability of FreeBSD 11.3-RELEASE. This is the fourth release of the
   stable/11 branch.

   Some of the highlights:

     * The clang, llvm, lld, lldb, and compiler-rt utilities as well as
       libc++ have been updated to upstream version 8.0.0.

     * The ELF Tool Chain has been updated to version r3614.

     * OpenSSL has been updated to version 1.0.2s.

     * The ZFS filesystem has been updated to implement parallel mounting.

     * The loader(8) has been updated to extend geli(8) support to all
       architectures.

     * The pkg(8) utility has been updated to version 1.10.5.

     * The KDE desktop environment has been updated to version 5.15.3.

     * The GNOME desktop environment has been updated to version 3.28.

     * The kernel will now log the jail(8) ID when logging a process exit.

     * Several feature additions and updates to userland applications.

     * Several network driver firmware updates.

     * Warnings for features deprecated in future releases will now be
       printed on all FreeBSD versions.

     * Warnings have been added for IPSec algorithms deprecated in RFC 8221.

     * Deprecation warnings have been added for weaker algorithms when
       creating geli(8) providers.

Availability

   FreeBSD 11.3-RELEASE is now available for the amd64, i386, powerpc,
   powerpc64, sparc64, armv6, and aarch64 architectures.

   FreeBSD 11.3-RELEASE can be installed from bootable ISO images or over
   the network. Some architectures also support installing from a USB memory
   stick. The required files can be downloaded as described in the section
   below.

   SHA512 and SHA256 hashes for the release ISO, memory stick, and SD card
   images are included at the bottom of this message.

   PGP-signed checksums for the release images are also available at:

   The purpose of the images provided as part of the release are as follows:

   dvd1

           This contains everything necessary to install the base FreeBSD
           operating system, the documentation, debugging distribution sets,
           and a small set of pre-built packages aimed at getting a
           graphical workstation up and running. It also supports booting
           into a "livefs" based rescue mode. This should be all you need if
           you can burn and use DVD-sized media.

   disc1

           This contains the base FreeBSD operating system. It also supports
           booting into a "livefs" based rescue mode. There are no pre-built
           packages.

   bootonly

           This supports booting a machine using the CDROM drive but does
           not contain the installation distribution sets for installing
           FreeBSD from the CD itself. You would need to perform a network
           based install (e.g., from an HTTP or FTP server) after booting
           from the CD.

   memstick

           This can be written to a USB memory stick (flash drive) and used
           to do an install on machines capable of booting off USB drives.
           It also supports booting into a "livefs" based rescue mode. There
           are no pre-built packages.

           As one example of how to use the memstick image, assuming the USB
           drive appears as /dev/da0 on your machine something like this
           should work:

           # dd if=FreeBSD-11.3-RELEASE-amd64-memstick.img \
             of=/dev/da0 bs=1m conv=sync

           Be careful to make sure you get the target (of=) correct.

   mini-memstick

           This can be written to a USB memory stick (flash drive) and used
           to boot a machine, but does not contain the installation
           distribution sets on the medium itself, similar to the bootonly
           image. It also supports booting into a "livefs" based rescue
           mode. There are no pre-built packages.

           As one example of how to use the mini-memstick image, assuming
           the USB drive appears as /dev/da0 on your machine something like
           this should work:

           # dd if=FreeBSD-11.3-RELEASE-amd64-mini-memstick.img \
             of=/dev/da0 bs=1m conv=sync

           Be careful to make sure you get the target (of=) correct.

   FreeBSD/arm SD card images

           These can be written to an SD card and used to boot the supported
           arm system. The SD card image contains the full FreeBSD
           installation, and can be installed onto SD cards as small as
           512Mb.

           For convenience for those without console access to the system, a
           freebsd user with a password of freebsd is available by default
           for ssh(1) access. Additionally, the root user password is set to
           root, which it is strongly recommended to change the password for
           both users after gaining access to the system.

           To write the FreeBSD/arm image to an SD card, use the dd(1)
           utility, replacing KERNEL with the appropriate kernel
           configuration name for the system.

           # dd if=FreeBSD-11.3-RELEASE-arm-armv6-KERNEL.img \
             of=/dev/da0 bs=1m conv=sync

           Be careful to make sure you get the target (of=) correct.

   FreeBSD 11.3-RELEASE can also be purchased on CD-ROM or DVD from several
   vendors. One of the vendors that will be offering FreeBSD 11.3-based

   Pre-installed virtual machine images are also available for the amd64
   (x86_64), i386 (x86_32), and AArch64 (arm64) architectures in QCOW2, VHD,

Folgendes habe ich noch gelesen:
[2019-07-04] An issue when upgrading from FreeBSD 11.3 to FreeBSD 12.0 (which occurred earlier in time, comparatively), had been reported where the com.delphix:spacemap_v2 zpool(8) feature does not exist on FreeBSD 12.0, will fail to import the ZFS pool.
Das bedeutet, dass man von FreeBSD 11.3 welches neu installiert wurde nicht auch FreeBSD 12.0 updaten kann! Erst mit FreeBSD 12.1 wird dies wieder funktionieren.
 
Es gibt zum Beispiel Leute bei denen die neuen Netzwerktreiber aus 12.0 nicht laufen . Andere wollen erstmal sicher gehen, daß die größeren Umbauten in 12.0 auch stabil funktionieren (Inhouse Tests, Ergebnisse aus der freieb Wildbahn .)

Jup, Intel-NICs werden vorrangig eingesetzt und das Zusammenwerfen der Treiber hat a weng ungeahntes Kuddelmuddel gegeben.

Anderes Beispiel: Kunde hat aus Spargründen des Todes (heutzutage gar nicht mal so selten) eine einzelne physikalische Maschine, wo sein Webshop drauf läuft. Der wartet lieber erstmal ab.
 
Bei mir ist es aktuell Faulheit. Gibt nichts was FreeBSD 12 mir bringen würde und da ein Minor-Release Upgrade bei FreeBSD fast genauso aufwändig ist, wie ein Major-Release Upgrade, erspare ich mir ein paar Upgrade-Stufen. Ich geh dann einfach irgendwann von 11.3/4 auf 12.3/4, statt 11.2 -> 12.0 -> 12.1 -> 12.2 -> 12.3.
 
Welche Gründe, Vorteile oder Nachteile kann es geben, 11.3 anstatt von 12.0 zu verwenden?

Wenn man die Neuerungen nicht braucht, gibt es schonmal keine Nachteile.

Und dann ist da die Sache mit der Grafik. In Rel.11 funktionieren die im Kernelcode enthaltenen Treiber (drm2) jedenfalls für meine Intel (Ivybridge) GPU. Ich weiss nicht wie das in Rel.12 aussieht, denn da wird ja einiges dran gemacht. Da ist halt die Frage, ob und wann man Zeit und Nerv hat, das herauszufinden (und ob und wann man ggfs. eh neue Hardware kauft und dann einen größeren Opus durchzieht).

Dazu muss man aber noch anmerken, dass es lange Zeit so aussah, dass womöglich 11.X länger unterstützt wird als 12.X, da die Unterstützung für 12 lange Zeit nicht geklärt war und dann auch schlecht kommuniziert wurde.
 
Vielen Dank für Eure Antworten! Aber noch eine Frage: Kann es auch einen Unterschied im Powermanagement zwischen 11.x und 12.0 geben? Ich frage das wegen meinem Problem mit den gelegentlichen Abstürzen meines Laptops.
Die sind ganz sicher bedingt durch Überhitzung, da die Außentemperatur hier im Sommer auch sehr hoch ist.
Das Problem trat aber viel massiver auf nach Einbau einer SSD und Frischinstallation von 12.0 (vorher 11.2 auf der alten Platte). Da fallen also zwei Ändereungen zusammen. Ich habe mittlerweile auch die Wärmeleitpaste erneuert, scheint nun etwas besser zu sein, aber Abstürze gibt es gelegentlich immer noch.

Könnte die Installation von 11.3 anstatt von 12.0 da vielleicht noch etwas bringen?
