Hallo!

ich möchte auf einem Rechner mit Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13GHz CPU FreeBSD amd64 installieren. Eigentlich ist dies kein Problem, nur dass die Geschwindigkeit während der Installation und danach unheimlich langsam ist. Als ob noch die Handbremse angezogen ist. :-(

Das Mainboard hat einen 82801 H Chipsatz (ICH 8 Family ?), 2 SATA-Platten und ein SATA-DVD-Brenner. Die Grafik-Karte ist eine Intel 965Q

Wenn ich eine i386-Installation mache geht es schneller als mit der amd64-Version. Der Nachteil ist nun der, dass ich nur 32-Bit nutze und von den 6GB nur 3GB zu Verfügung habe.

Parallel habe ich ein Linux (OpenSUSE 11.4, 64-Bit) auf einer zweite Platte installiert und dieses geht auch einwandfrei in der 64bit Version.

Kann mir jemand helfen, das Problem mit dem gebremsten amd64 zu lösen?

Ist die CPU langsam oder die Festplatten? Du musst schon einige Fakten präsentieren, sonst kann man da nicht viel helfen.

Hast Du schon mal geguckt ob irgendein Programm oder Kerneltreiber die CPU frisst?

Hallo jetzt bin ich wieder da!

Ich habe nun systat und systat -iostat ausprobiert. Es zeigt fast 100% idle an. Auch die iostat zeigt fast idle bei der CPU und dem Controller an.

Heißt das nun das der Rechner eigentlich optimal an?

Interressant ist auch, dass er "nur" 3GB findet, anstatt der 6GB.

Hat jemand noch eine Idee? Soll ich noch etwas auswerten?

Also du nutzt i386, darum nur 3GBytes

Kann es sein, dass dann auch die i386 Version langsam ist?

Hängen deine Platten an einem 3ware Controller (twed0)? Ausgehend vom ersten Post gehe ich eher von den SATA-Anschlüssen auf dem Mainboard aus. Was stimmt jetzt?

Intel unterstützt nicht voll amd64 und bei gewissen Sachen wie Treiber werden nur 32bit addressiert als Beispiel und es gibt da an gewissen Ecken kleine Einbußen zum Orginal.

CPU und Board unterstützen Intel64
Du weißt ja, nur Orginal ist echt.

@Kamikaze: Wenn ich mich bei der KDE anmelde, dann dauert es ca. 1 Minute(!) Bis der Desktop erscheint.

Ich habe während des starten systat -iostat laufen lassen, und habe 100% Auslastung im user Bereich gesehen.

systemmonitor unter KDE kann ich immer 2 Prozesse mit 50% im kdeinit sehen. Die Programme starten immer mit 30-45 Sekunden Verzögerung. :-(

Was läuft hier falsch?

@Flex6: Ich glaube auch, dass nur das Original lauft. Ich habe nur hier den Rechner in der Firma und der ist einfach so konfiguriert. Blödes Glumpp. ;-)

Das Thema "amd64 auf Intel" ist überbewertet. Es stimmt, dass bei sehr frühen Intel-Prozessoren aus der Netburst-Ära einige CPU-Instruktionen aus dem amd64-Befehlssatz fehlten. Später hatten die Core2-Prozessoren unter amd64 einige Optimierungen nicht, so konnte die "Macro-Op Fusion" im Longmode nicht arbeiten. Beides resultierte daraus, dass die 64-Bit-Unterstützung nachträglich in ein bestehendes CPU-Design eingefügt werden musste, da Intel seine Fische davonschwimmen sah. Wirklich böse Auswirkungen hat in der Praxis beides aber nicht. Die fehlenden Instruktionen wurden lange vermieden und die Macro-Op Fusion kann man allenfalls in synthetischen Benchmarks rausmessen. Bei neueren Intel-Prozessoren - beginnend ab Nehalem-Generation - ist Intel64 allerdings eine vollständige und uneingeschränkte Implementierung von amd64. Leider Gottes ist sie durch einige schöne Decoder-Magie sogar performanter als AMDs derzeitige, was sich in den nächsten Wochen aber hoffentlich wieder in Richtung Gleichstand korrigieren wird. :)
 
Du vergisst die 3GB Speichergrenze, Yamagi.

Was noch nett ist, ist dass der ganze nichtportable i386-Müll auf der amd64-Plattform nicht existiert. Das führt dazu, dass man nicht einmal auf die Idee kommt, es zu installieren. Implizit ist im Punkt Sicherheit amd64 also auch besser. Wer das nämlich mit dem "long int" auf die Reihe gekriegt hat, der hat schon etwas mehr verstanden als der Durchschnitt der kommerziellen Programmierer.
 
Wieso die 3GB-Grenze? Die zeigt sich ja nur, wenn ich ein i386-System auf der CPU nutze, ich sprach aber von einem amd64-System. Das kann natürlich auch auf Intel-Plattformen theoretisch 2^64 Byte Speicher adressieren.

die haben intern unter umstaenden nur 32 bit pointer.

das wird dann bei dma-prozessen haarig. weswegen openbsd auch immer noch in der standardinstallation das bigmem ausgeschaltet hat.
 
@Yamagi: ich habe ja nur gemeint, dass falls man mehr als 3GB hat, möchte man gerne amd64 haben. Dein Post klang so als ob es für amd64 keinen guten Grund gäbe.
 
Achso. Das meinte ich nicht. Ich würde immer amd64 nehmen, wenn die CPU es kann. :)

... Lese ich das richtig, dass ich noch die 32Bit Umgebung einbinden sollte, um eine bessere Kompatibilität zu erreichen?

Mit "kaputt" meine ich hoffnungslos kaputte Applikationen aus den Ports, zum Beispiel wine. amd64 ist schon OK für Dein Szenario, finde ich.
 
Mein Problem ist, dass ich gerade eine Standard Installation gemacht und dann xorg und kfe4 über pkg_add -r auf dem Rechner installiert habe.

Sind diese Packages nicht in 64-bit kompiliert?

Nein, FreeBSD/amd64 installiert immer entsprechende Pakete. Das wird also schon richtig sein. Wenn du ganz sicher gehen willst, rufst du einfach mal file(1) auf einem Programm auf, es sagt es dir dann eindeutig:

Das Problem sind aber wahrscheinlich deine beiden amoklaufenden KDE-Prozesse. Leider habe ich von KDE so gut wie keine Ahnung, weshalb ich der falsche Ansprechpartner bin. Sollte sich hier aber niemand sonst melden, könntest du einmal ein dezentes "rm -Rf ~/.kde ~/.qt" machen und ganz von vorn beginnen. Eine neue Konfiguration kann gern mal Wunder wirken.

Ich werde das ausprobieren. Ich vermute, dass kompilieren besser ist als package installieren, aber das muss ich heute nacht einmal testen.

Ich wollte nun kurz einen Zwischenbericht abgeben.
Ich habe den Kernel einmal neu kompiliert und anschließend die 32Bit Umgebung, wie sie auch für VirtualBox benötigt wird, kompiliert.

Leider hat dies immer noch keine Verbesserung gebracht. :-(

Was mir aber mit mit systat -vmstat aufgefallen ist, bei CPU0 und CPU1 sind im 2000 Interrupts. Ist das normal? Woher kommen diese?
