Das FreeBSD Release Engineering Team hat planmässig FreeBSD 11.1 freigegeben. Es ist das zweite Subrelease der FreeBSD 11 Serie und bringt als solches sowohl kleinere Verbesserungen als auch Sicherheitsupdates mit.

Wie seit der letzten Änderung des Supportzyklus gilt auch hier: Jede Unterversion wird nur noch 3 Monate nach Erscheinen der folgenden Unterversion unterstützt [1]. Somit ist ein Update auf FreeBSD 11.1 innerhalb von 3 Monaten durchzuführen.

Installationsimages und VM-Images können ab sofort von den FTP-Servern heruntergeladen werden. Binärupdates sind per freebsd-update(8) möglich und der Quellcode steht per SVN und Git zur Verfügung.

Neben Bugfixes und Treiberaktualisierungen sind die wichtigsten Änderungen gegenüber FreeBSD 11.0:
  • cron(8) unterstützt nun die Verzeichnise /etc/cron.d und /usr/local/etc/cron.d welche Dateien enthalten können
  • Gleiches gilt auch für syslogd(8) in den Verzeichnisen /etc/syslog.d und /usr/local/etc/syslog.d
  • OpenSSH unterstützt nun auch blacklistd
  • bspatch wie auch bhyve nutzt nun auch das Sicherheitsframework Capsicum
  • Jails erlauben nun die explizite Zuweisung von IPv4 und IPv6 Adressen
  • Dem daemon Tool ist es nun möglich stdout und stderr in eine Datei oder auch syslog umzuleiten
  • Mit dem Befehl efivar lassen sich nun UEFI Einstellungen bearbeiten
  • Der Kernel unterstützt nun Module für ipsec und tcpmd5. Weiter gab es Updates für ipfw(4)
  • bhyve(4) unterstützt nun "PCI passthrough" auch auf AMD Systemen
  • Der Support für die Cloudplattformen von Microsoft (Hyper-V) und Amazon (EC2) wurde verbessert und der NFS Client kann nun auch mit dem Amazon Elastic File System (EFS) umgehen
  • ARM Support steht für die Platform Allwinner A13 zur Verfügung
Etliche Netzwerk- und Storage-Treiber wurden erneuert als auch hinzugefügt. Darunter befinden sich Einträge für verschiedene Chromebooks chromebook_platform(4) als auch Intel Bay Trail SoC GPIO Kontroller bytgpio(4).

The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the
availability of FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE. This is the second release of the
stable/11 branch.

Some of the highlights:

* Clang, LLVM, LLD, LLDB, and libc++ have been updated to version
4.0.0.

* Many third-party (contributed) software updates, such as the Elf Tool
Chain, ACPICA, libarchive(3), ntpd(8), unbound(8), and more.

* Support for blacklistd(8) has been added to OpenSSH.

* The zfsbootcfg(8) utility has been added, providing one-time
boot.config(5)-style options for zfsboot(8).

* The efivar(8) utility has been added, providing an interface to
manage UEFI variables.

* Support for Microsoft(R) Hyper-V(TM) Generation 2 virtual machines
has been added.

* The ena(4) driver has been added, providing support for "next
generation" Enhanced Networking on the Amazon(R) EC2(TM) platform.

* The NFS client now supports the Amazon(R) Elastic File System(TM)
(EFS).

* The EFI loader can now access remote files via TFTP in addition to
NFS as a runtime configuration option.

* ZFS now stores compressed data in cache, improving cache hit rates
and performance.

* Several updates to provide build reproducibility.

Availability

FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE is now available for the amd64, i386, powerpc,
powerpc64, sparc64, armv6, and aarch64 architectures.

FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE can be installed from bootable ISO images or over
the network. Some architectures also support installing from a USB memory
stick. The required files can be downloaded as described in the section
below.

SHA512 and SHA256 hashes for the release ISO, memory stick, and SD card
images are included at the bottom of this message.

Note for those upgrading from 11.1-RC2 in VirtualBox(TM):
If system panics were experienced when upgrading from 11.1-RC1 to
11.1-RC2, and the emulators/virtualbox-ose-additions{,-nox11} port was
built locally as a resolution, the port will either need to be rebuilt
when upgrading from 11.1-RC2 to 11.1-RELEASE, or reinstall the package
from the pkg(8) mirrors using either:

# pkg install -f virtualbox-ose-additions

or:

# pkg install -f virtualbox-ose-additions-nox11

To ensure the system does not panic after rebooting into the updated
kernel, it is recommended to disable the vboxguest service in rc.conf(5)
prior to rebooting the system if possible, or use pkg(8) to forcefully
reinstall the package.

Systems being upgraded from 11.1-RC1 and earlier and 11.1-RC3 to
11.1-RELEASE should be unaffected.

The purpose of the images provided as part of the release are as follows:

dvd1

This contains everything necessary to install the base FreeBSD
operating system, the documentation, debugging distribution sets,
and a small set of pre-built packages aimed at getting a
graphical workstation up and running. It also supports booting
into a "livefs" based rescue mode. This should be all you need if
you can burn and use DVD-sized media.

disc1

This contains the base FreeBSD operating system. It also supports
booting into a "livefs" based rescue mode. There are no pre-built
packages.

bootonly

This supports booting a machine using the CDROM drive but does
not contain the installation distribution sets for installing
FreeBSD from the CD itself. You would need to perform a network
based install (e.g., from an HTTP or FTP server) after booting
from the CD.

memstick

This can be written to an USB memory stick (flash drive) and used
to do an install on machines capable of booting off USB drives.
It also supports booting into a "livefs" based rescue mode. There
are no pre-built packages.

As one example of how to use the memstick image, assuming the USB
drive appears as /dev/da0 on your machine something like this
should work:

# dd if=FreeBSD-11.1-RELEASE-amd64-memstick.img \
of=/dev/da0 bs=1m conv=sync

Be careful to make sure you get the target (of=) correct.

mini-memstick

This can be written to an USB memory stick (flash drive) and used
to boot a machine, but does not contain the installation
distribution sets on the medium itself, similar to the bootonly
image. It also supports booting into a "livefs" based rescue
mode. There are no pre-built packages.

As one example of how to use the mini-memstick image, assuming
the USB drive appears as /dev/da0 on your machine something like
this should work:

# dd if=FreeBSD-11.1-RELEASE-amd64-mini-memstick.img \
of=/dev/da0 bs=1m conv=sync

Be careful to make sure you get the target (of=) correct.

FreeBSD/arm SD card images

These can be written to an SD card and used to boot the supported
arm system. The SD card image contains the full FreeBSD
installation, and can be installed onto SD cards as small as
512Mb.

For convenience for those without console access to the system, a
freebsd user with a password of freebsd is available by default
for ssh(1) access. Additionally, the root user password is set to
root, which it is strongly recommended to change the password for
both users after gaining access to the system.

To write the FreeBSD/arm image to an SD card, use the dd(1)
utility, replacing KERNEL with the appropriate kernel
configuration name for the system.

# dd if=FreeBSD-11.1-RELEASE-arm-armv6-KERNEL.img \
of=/dev/da0 bs=1m conv=sync

Be careful to make sure you get the target (of=) correct.

FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE can also be purchased on CD-ROM or DVD from several
vendors. One of the vendors that will be offering FreeBSD 11.1-based

Hmm, schade, taugt leider immer noch nicht als Haupt-OS für mein X260 :-(
  • Unterstützung für Intel-Skylake GPU fehlt (oder habe ich da was überlesen?)
  • iwm ist alles andere als stabil, da scheint es derzeit einen Bug zu geben, der den 8260-Chip quasi lahmlegt (bzw. andauernd resettet), vermutlich im Zusammenhang mit der Firmware-API (stand so im Bug, habe grade kein Glück beim Googlen :-( )
Mit dem WiFi-Problem könnte ich leben, wenn es zeitnah gefixt wird, aber mit vesa(4x) als Video-Treiber werde ich nicht warm :grumble:

Da werde ich wohl weiterhin "nur" mit einer FreeBSD-VM arbeiten können :ugly:
 
Nein, drm-next und damit die Unterstützung für neuere Intel-GPUs ist wieder nicht mit dabei. :(
 
Kann auch bestätigen, dass das Update sauber funktioniert. Für ZFS-Systeme zahlt sich compressed ARC allein schon richtig aus. :)

Kannst du mir sagen, wie man die Werte interpretieren muss/kann? Gemeint ist der Wert von Compressed und Uncompressed. Habe bei meinem NAS z.B. diese hier:

Hm, freebsd-update durchgeführt, neugestartet, pkg upgrade -f
So ziemlich alle komplizierteren Anwendungen segfaulten. GTK-Anwendungen direkt, KDE-Anwendungen mit etwas Verzögerung.

Das lief ja eben seidenweich durch, das Major Upgrade von FreeBSD 10.3-STABLE amd64 auf FreeBSD 11.1-STABLE amd64. Die Welt bauen dauerte zwar mehr als doppelt so lange und folgende options und device gab es für meinen Custom Kernel im 11er Zweig nicht mehr:

Aber Spitze! :)

Dabei hatte ich ausgerechnet diesmal so viel Schiss. War aber völlig unbegründet. Den Anstoß dies dann heute doch durchzuziehen hat mir der komprimierbare ARC gegeben. Der schwoll unter 10.3 doch heftig an, so dass ich nun gespannt bin, wie sich der komprimierbare ARC nun bei mir hier auswirken wird. Da ja nun in den nächsten Tagen und Nächten ausufernde Compiler Orgien anstehen, kann ich das dann gleich mal unter schwerer Last beobachten. :ugly:

Was mich noch ein bisschen irritiert hat, wo ist denn die geli Abfrage hin verschwunden? Es blieb dann einfach irgendwo stehen, während der Kernel seine roten Meldungen (ich habe sie eingefärbt*) auf den Monitor spuckte, aber ich ahnte dann ja so ungefähr, was ich tun musste. Danach ist alles fein durchgestartet, sogar der nvidia-driver tat es gleich mit dem neuen Hauptzweig, weil dafür hatte ich ja in der /etc/src.conf drin stehen:

mergemaster rannte auch mit Automagie durch und hat mich kaum Zeit gekostet, war wohl gerade ein idealer Zeitpunkt für den Umstieg von 10er STABLE Hauptzweig auf den 11er STABLE Hauptzweig. :cool:

Ja, schon klar, dass man das freebsd-update mehrmals machen muss, ist ja nicht mein erstes update!

Und warum überhaupt ein pkg upgrade -f?

Außer, dass ich ja schon auf dem NVidia-Treiber 340 bin (der ältere hilft auch nicht, und der neuere unterstützt die Karte garnicht mehr). Den Nvidia-Treiber von den Ports manuell neubauen und installieren hilft auch nicht.

edit: ein freebsd-update IDS bringt auch nichts auffälliges zu Tage.
 
So, ich habe jetzt von der Technik eine NVS 315 als Ersatz für die NVS 300 bekommen, erstere geht noch mit dem aktuellen Treiber. Leider aber gleiches Spiel :(

Ich werde mal den nvidia-driver-3.4.0 nehmen, der dürfte meine GeForce GT 730 auch unterstützen und dann berichten.
 
Habe gerade mal den nvidia-driver-340 gebaut und dann installiert. Und:
Treffer, daran lag es. audacity stürzt nicht mehr ab. :)
Nun bin ich mit dem neuen FreeBSD 11.1 zufrieden.
Schön, dass ein Tag mit einem solchen Erfolgserlebnis endet.

Leider ein wenig zu früh gefreut:
Auf meinem Notebook mit Intelgrafik schmiert audacity auch ab. Ich habe schon xrender statt opengl probiert, wie beim aktuellen nvidia-375 stürzt audacity bei beiden compositern nach kurzer Zeit mit einem segfault ab.

Da werde ich wohl vorerst bei FreeBSD 11.0 p11 bleiben, ich brauche audacity beruflich.

Ich bekomme das ...i386-memstick.img nicht vom Stick gestartet. Ich habe es auf 2 Sticks und 2 Geräten versucht. Mit win32image-Writer wie immer. Es will einfach nicht klappen. Zuvor war dort FreeBSD installiert worden, an den Notebooks bzw BIOS Einstellungen kanns def. nicht liegen.

Ich probiers jetzt mal mit der i386-dvd1.iso. Wie bekomme ich die unter Windows am besten auf den USB Stick?
